Fresh analysis reveals that individuals who come off blockbuster slimming jabs like semaglutide or tirzepatide may regain shed pounds far faster than those who end conventional lifestyle plans.
Research printed in a major health publication shows that while overweight individuals often shed substantial amounts of their total mass while using the jabs, the mass is regained at an estimated rate of nearly a kilo each month after stopping.
"People buying such treatments need to be informed of the potential of rapid rebound weight gain when the treatment is stopped," cautioned researcher Dr. Susan Jebb.
That rate of recovery means a reversion to original weight within about a year and a half.
Weighing Treatments
The analysis, which examined 37 of studies involving thousands of participants, compared the effects of these new drugs with conventional dieting.
Researchers note that individuals who shed pounds through lifestyle changes alone typically have a slower creep back—approximately 100 grams monthly—once they finish.
The Reason for the Fast Rebound
Nutrition scientists suggest the mechanism of the jabs explains the accelerated weight return.
GLP-1 drugs imitate a natural hormone called glucagon-like peptide-1, which helps regulate hunger.
"Sustained high doses of GLP-1 levels several times higher than the body's typical production might result in the system to produce less of its endogenous hormone, and could diminish responsiveness to its effects," explained Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics expert.
"Discontinuation of this medication results in hunger is uncontrolled, making overeating much more probable."
A Lifelong Condition?
Health authorities recommend the jabs for people with weight-linked health risks, accompanied by prescribed lifestyle changes.
Many experts argue that, given the likelihood of weight regain, the treatment should be considered ongoing.
This perspective is supported by drug manufacturers, who note that the findings "underscore the persistent nature of obesity," comparing it to managing diseases like hypertension.
User Accounts
Users who have come off the jabs report a intense return of appetite.
"It was like a trigger that goes on and you're instantly starving," described an individual.
This difficulty is exacerbated if patients have not adopted sustainable dietary or behavioural modifications during therapy.
Growing Use
Survey data suggest that a significant number of people in the UK have used these injections in the last 12 months, with demand being substantial.
- Use is higher among females than men.
- The middle-aged demographic shows the highest level of interest.
- Many obtain the drugs through private healthcare rather than the NHS.
Ultimately, researchers caution that while these medications are potent tools for weight loss, they are not a standalone solution and long-term success hinges on integrated behavioural support.
