Fed Lowers Interest Rates for Second Time This Year Amid Economic Uncertainty

The US central bank reduced borrowing costs on Wednesday, marking the second reduction in the current year amid financial volatility originating from the government closure and trade duties.

Move Comes at Extraordinary Time for Federal Reserve

The decision to cut the benchmark interest rate by a 0.25% to a span of 3.75% to 4% arrives at an unprecedented juncture for the Fed. The authority has been under significant strain to cut rates even with persistent inflation.

Central Bank Announcement Highlights Job Market Changes

In a statement, the Fed stated that the unemployment rate had increased but stays modest. “Job gains have slowed,” the statement reads. “Inflation has moved up and stays moderately high.”

Government Shutdown Hinders Fed’s Job

The ongoing government stoppage, now one of the longest in US history, has also hindered the central bank’s task. Collection of important financial statistics has been suspended without a timeline as staff at the BLS are on leave during the closure.

Information Shortage Impacts Monetary Moves

The Federal Reserve usually studies labor statistics to assess labor market conditions, such as the number of employment gains created to the economy and the current jobless percentage. The most recent employment data was released in early September, prior to the closure, and gave a somewhat gloomy overview of the employment scene in August.

The figure of jobs added to the market in August was lower by over 100k since the earlier season, and unemployment rose to 4.3% – the highest since three years ago.

Alternative Reports Indicate Continued Slowdown

Though BLS was set to release September’s job market report in the start of last month, it suspended its release when the shutdown started. Employment data company ADP indicated recently that the business segment cut thirty-two thousand positions in September, a sign that the job market is continuing to slow.

“Supply as well as demand for labor has fallen quite sharply,” central bank head the Fed chairman said recently, a trend he had earlier said comes from trade and immigration measures.

Price Data Shows Moderate Rise

Though the bureau’s jobs report has been suspended, the agency still issued its inflation report for last month that showed that costs are going up, although slowly. Prices increased three percent over the last year, the peak since the start of the year. In spring, the yearly price increase was two point three percent, the lowest it has been since three years ago. The central bank’s goal inflation rate is two percent.
